PONDICHERRY (http://tourism.pondicherry.gov.in/) (http://www.pondicherry.net.in/)

An ethnic Tamil culture seamlessly embraces a charming French flavour resulting in aunique cosmopolitan flair–making Pondicherry a definite “must” on your travel list! Blessed gracefully by nature, the entire region is dotted with pretty water bodies, a rolling green landscape and a serene ambience. The serenity of the town and its surrounding are what drew the Sri Aurobindo Ashram here, which in turn has over the years attracted abundant visitors in pursuit of spirituality and peace. A famous monument is the AayiMandapam at the centre of the Park. The French Consulate, Raj Nivas, the former palace of Dupleix, the Botanical Gardens, the Chunnambar boat house, Bharathi Park, the Museum, the Romain Rolland Library and the 400-year old banyan tree at Keezhoor are also not to be missed during your visit to Pondicherry. The city is also a comfortable base from which to explore other interesting places in the surrounding region. Auroville, the city of human unity, Kanchipuram, the temple town, and Mamallapuram, the heritage town are just some of the important and interesting places that can easily be visited from your Pondicherry base.
